FOUNDATIONS FOR LEARNING

Foundations for Learning is a free ATWC service that supports families/whanau with three- to four-year-old children/tamariki who are not participating in centre or home-based early childhood education.

Our co-ordinators help families to engage their children in early learning at home or at a quality ECE service of their choice – providing ongoing support for up to 2¼ years from when children are 3 years old until 12 weeks after they start school.

The programme – part of the Ministry of Education’s Engaging Priority Families/Whanau Initiative – targets Maori, Pasifika and low-socio-economic families/whanau to help them achieve strong, early learning foundations through sustained early childhood education.

Foundations for Learning helps families to:

  • understand the benefits of early childhood education and make informed decisions about ECE services
  • identify and overcome barriers to their children attending an ECE service.
  • set up life-long foundations for their children’s learning including early numeracy and literacy skills
  • help their child to develop social skills, self esteem and friendships and transition them to school

To take part:

  • children must be 3 to 4 years old and not taking part in home or centre-based early childhood education
  • families must be of Pasifika or Maori ethnicity and/or of low socio-economic status and live in one of the following areas:
