Social Workers in Secondary Schools are placed within a specific school and are available to support young people and their families withissues outside the classroom that may be affecting their wellbeing. They also offer support to ensure that the young people to get the most out of their education. The Social Workers are trained and qualified professionals who work in collaboration with young people, their families and the school.
Social Workers in Secondary Schools work only with your consent
The Social Worker can offer you the following kinds of support regarding:
• Peer relationships
• Bullying
• Peer pressure
• Pregnancy
• Social skills and communication
• Family relationships
• Domestic violence issues
• Mental health issues such as; depression, grief, self-harm and suicide
• Drug and alcohol issues
• and much more.
Who can refer to the Social Worker?
• You can refer yourself
• Your teachers or deans, family or friends
can refer to the social worker service
• Your family won’t be included in the service without your consent
• If you have any concerns at all, feel free to talk confidentially with the social worker at your school.
Social Workers in Secondary Schools have 4 main roles in delivering their service:
• They work with you to address issues confi dentially
• They help you access community supports and networks
• They provide group programmes to support you at school
• They work with your family to support you at school but only with your consent
