Attachment Therapy Services

The Attachment Therapy service is an extension of our Child Psychotherapy and Granger Grove services.
Attachment relationships are the unique and lasting emotional ties between infants and their parents. It provides the base from which the child can safely explore their world. Attachment relationships lay the foundations for the child’s later social, emotional and school/cognitive functioning.
There are two basic patterns of attachment: secure and insecure. The key factor to promoting a secure attachment is parent – child interaction. The child is always an active partner in this interaction, signalling the need for closeness or protection. More secure attachment relationships can be developed through a better understanding of these signals and how to respond to them.
Many factors can impact on the developing attachment relationship including; parental depression/grief, parental stress, extreme financial pressure, family violence/trauma, drug/alcohol dependency, loss or extended separation from the primary attachment figure, childhood illness and a parents own childhood experience.
At ATWC, Attachment therapy is used to understand and offer specific strategies to support the parent–child relationship.
Types of Therapy we can offer?
Our specialist staff use recognised assessment methods to establish which model would be best to deliver attachment therapy to their clients. While there are a range of different techniques one can use in order to facilitate this work, we strongly believe that the treatment modality offered should have a focus on the child and parent/caregiver relationship and should take place in a child orientated setting. Research shows that any type of treatment must also take into account the child’s developmental needs, environment (family, school, CYFS, health needs etc) and works at the client’s pace. With this in mind ATWC has found that the following therapies encapsulate what attachment therapy aims to provide:
- Parent and Infant Psychotherapy
- Wait, Watch and Wonder technique with pre-verbal and pre-school children and their caregiver.
- Parent and Child Therapy
- Video feedback sessions
After assessment, the duration of these types of treatment modalities range from short term, 4-6 months, to long term, 18-24 months.
Through effective and appropriate attachment therapy we would achieve either an establishment of a safe and protecting attachment relationship, recovery from trauma within the attachment relationship or resolving a disturbed attachment relationship.
